Both Apollo and Challenger Troops took part in this weekend camp to the Long Mynd. Walking on the Long Mynd on Saturday and rock climbing on Sunday both took place in dry weather. We even had some sunshine.

Have a look in the GALLERY for the videos and photos. This was our 6th trip to the Long Mynd in the last 12 years

Louise and Steve set off early on Friday to meet with the Tesco Grocery delivery van. We noticed that the A49 south of Shrewsbury would be closed from 8pm. The main party were informed and the minibus went on a planned diversion via Much Wenlock. The 2 cars however found their own diversion and independently found a route that required a ford to be crossed. How deep was it? Not too deep as it turned out.

At the Long Mynd Adventre Camp the Bunk Houses have been replaced by new double glazed and insulated ones – a great improvement.

After breakfast it was into the minibus to go to the start of the walk at Carding Mill Valley. Three groups went on various routes to meet at the trig point at Pole Bank. One group went on a short side trip to look at a reservoir.

Another group went up and over the hills rather than following a valley. They never did find the the correct footpath but non the less arrived at Pole Bank for lunch only a little behind the others.

Going to Pole Bank was only possible because both Philip & Greg had the correct permits to go over 500m above sea level. Pole Bank is 516 m above sea level.

Different routes were used after lunch to get back to the Camp.
See the GALLERY for pictures and VIDEOS.

Assisted by the adults, Scouts prepared and cooked their own evening meal: home made meatballs and tomato sauce, chicken in mushroom sauce, garlic bread, roasted vegetables and homemade pasta. For pudding Scouts prepared fresh fruit that was used by us all to construct our own instant cheesecakes. Have a look at the photos to see the food being prepared and eaten.

During the weekend we were honoured by visits from several old friends. As we returned to The Adventure Centre from hiking, Greg’s brother Bill who is a Group Scout Leader in Mid Wales and many of us know from sailing on SWAN along with his wife Sue met us and joined us for dinner. Ian Stanley (one of Bill’s old Scouts and another friend from SWAN) arrived just in time for dinner and spent the evening with us.

On Sunday we had arranged climbing with Chris Fryer another old Scouting friend from Shropshire who took Greg mountaineering as a lad. We met Chris and some friends from the Shropshire Borders Scout Mountaineering Group at Grinshill (Corbutt Wood) and were really surprised to find another old friend from SWAN Rachel Tomkins who is now a Shropshire activities instructor belaying. Her husband Steve (another one of Bill’s old Scouts and SWAN Sailor) and their children popped in to see us too.  Many thanks to Chris and the Mountaineering Group for their time an expertise. Have a look at some amazing pictures in the GALLERY.

After lunch it was back into the minibus for the return Journey.

Many thanks to all the Leaders/Helpers and drivers who made the event possible and thank you to the 11 enthusiastic Scouts who helped to make it a very enjoyable weekend.
