Challenger and Apollo Troops spent Saturday 17 February 2024 hiking from Elton to Oundle.
The hike started from the bus stop at Orton Mere to catch the 10:39 X4 bus to Elton.
16 Scouts 4 Leaders one young Leader and two parent helpers in 4 groups hiked to Oundle via Warmimgton.

The original route had to be changed due to flooding at Warmington and Ashton Mill.
Every time I came across Greg’s group they seem to be hibernating even though it was 13C.

Challenger and Apollo spent two days at Shacklewell Hollow Camp site not far from Rutland water.
The theme for the camp was “Backwoods” so instead of sleeping in the main building all the Scouts slept in tents.
All the cooking was on wood fire using kitchen foil. The chicken turned out well.
Did you know that you could make chips in foil with enough oil. What do you get if you overcook them? The result is not burnt chips but chip shaped pieces of high quality charcoal.

In conjunction with Holy Trinity Church Orton Longueville and St. Mary’s Church Orton Waterville 2nd Nene Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have been invited to make shoe box parcels for Operation Christmas Child.

Charlie brought Apollo’s first shoe box for the 2023 appeal to troop meeting towards his World Challenge Badge. Maria also brought a box.

Steve P and Greg met Maria, Thomas and William at Orton Mere car park at 10:25; had a quick kit check and safety briefing.
Greg and the Scouts walked up to the bus stop on Oundle Road to catch the X4 bus to Elton (minus Steve who was supporting in his car).

On Saturday 27th May 7 Apollo Scouts and 4 from Challenger Troop joined 11 from 1st Yaxley Phoenix Troop at Yaxley Scout HQ for a weekend camp.
The Scouts were formed into 4 patrols, each with a mixture of members from each of the troops.
First task was to pitch Icelandic patrol tents and layout the groundsheet with kit stored away for the day. After a packed lunch, patrol sites were prepared, with dinning shelter, picnic tables and altar fires before preparing wood for the fire.

The St George’s Camp was held at the HQ over Saturday and Sunday 22/23 April.
The Scouts slept outside in the dome tents, which they pitched. The Cubs and Beavers slept in the HQ.
Everyone was involved with cooking the meals and taking part in the many activities.

Roger the Pirate was in Cromer.
He now has a new home
in Peterborough.

On Friday evening 13 Scouts 1 Young Leader and 4 Leaders travelled to Roughton Mill* near Cromer in a minibus and Thunderbird 1. (TB1) **
Some of the Scouts wanted to sleep outside in tents. Fortunately the camping area could be floodlit making tent pitching easier.
After breakfast on Saturday the Scouts made their own sandwiches for lunch and then off to Beacon Hill in TB1 and the minibus. Three groups used two routes both of which ended up read more…

This was our 17th annual Chip Shop Hike.

18 Scouts divided into 4 groups used four slightly different routes, starting at Bainton Reading Rooms and ending at the chip shop in Bretton. Thanks to Bainton Reading Rooms for the use of their car park.

2022, what a brilliant year it’s been!
Collectively, we’ve achieved our biggest single year of growth in 70 years, continued to develop our newest section Squirrels, supported adults and young people through the incredibly difficult cost of living crisis and provided comfort for the nation during a period of mourning.  
Our biggest achievement, helping over 420,000 young people gain skills for life, providing them with fun and enjoyable activities.  
It’s because of our volunteers, that we were recognised as Charity of the Year 2022 in the Charity Times Awards.

It was great to have such a good attendance at The Carol Service on Monday.
Several members of the church and congregation were very complementary about The Scouts. One even gave us a £10 donation towards our funds.

From April 2021 we were still under restrictions for COVID 19 but managed to keep the troop
programme going with Zoom events and socially distanced outdoor meetings.
Zoom meetings included:
Patch Sewing.
Tent Pitching and sleepover at home
Tie Dying
Outdoor socially distanced meetings included:
Tent pitching kit checks in preparation for hikes and camps
Cooking on lightweight stoves and open fires
Local hikes
As COVID restrictions were lifted we were able to start meeting face to face with less
restrictions and included the following in the programme:

 We have an opportunity to bring a small ray of sunshine to children outside the United Kingdom who are affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine, and disease, by contributing to  
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD (see: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/ ), who provide shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies to these children.

If you would like to donate items, there are collection boxes at Apollo Meetings, in Holy Trinity Church Orton Longueville and St Mary’s Church, Orton Waterville (Up until end of October).

Chief Scout Bear Grylls OBE leads the mourning for our Patron.

As a family of Scouts, we are united in sorrow for the loss of our Patron, HM The Queen. She leaves a bright legacy of hope and promise for future generations. Together, we will honour her memory.   
We will remember her and give thanks for her kindness, her service, and the unwavering support she showed our movement over many decades. She was truly a friend to Scouts everywhere.

On the 21st February Apollo Scouts spent the evening making Camp Ovens.
Tin snips and two tpes of pop riviter along with an electric drill were some of the tools used under very close supervision.
On the 28th February Apollo Scouts made pizzas using Pitta Bread and cooked them in the camp ovens in the drizzle.

This was our 16th annual Chip Shop Hike. The last one was 2 years ago. COVID stopped  the Chip Shop Hike for 2021.
Two routes were used this time, starting at Marholm Village Hall and finishing at the Chip Shop at Orton Wistow

It was dull and cold with a breeze but fortunately no rain.
The ground was dry which made hiking easy.

Dear Friends,     
It has been great to see everyone back meeting at the HQ and getting back to some sort of normality.

There is not a Squirrel Drey at 2nd Nene yet.
 
On the 9th September 2021 this exciting new section, tailor made for 4 and 5 year olds, was launched.
Squirrels get to be active, explore nature and have fun learning outdoors with friends, like all other Scouts.
Many have joined in with scouting at home with their older siblings during the pandemic, so now is their chance to join in for real!

Activities involving young people: no limit on group size but remain as only one section meeting independently of others. Indoor activities will be limited by the size of the location given social distancing remains.
Scout Network programmed activities (non social): 30 people maximum.
Adult activities (non-social) with no young people present: Adults may meet in small groups for the purposes of providing the charity’s purpose. Full details in getting adults involved again guidance.

Philip, Scout Leader with Apollo Troop is moving to Nottingham and will unfortunately be leaving Apollo Troop.
He started Scouting as a 6 year old Beaver in Bluejay Colony, moving on to Eagle Cub Pack and then to Apollo Troop.
On returning from university he became an ASL with Apollo and progressed to being joint Scout Leader of the Troop.

Whilst Greg was  gardening on Sunday he was  visited by The High Sheriff of Cambrisgeshire who presented him with a boxed cream tea in lieu of attending a reception that was to have been held to recognise local volunteers.
Greg said “That the visit by the High Sheriff  was a complete surprise and it was lovely to meet him Greg also said that he was delighted and humbled to accept (and eat) the presentation.

Scouts from Apollo Troop took the opportunity to attend the first outside troop meeting since March.
Each Scout or household of Scouts were given a different bearing to walk on  until an illuminated cane was reached. They made a note of a letter assigned to their group and picked up a new bearing. After 6 bearings they end up with a 6 letter anagram which they needed to solve.
We were joined by biting insects, which we had predicted but would have preferred if they had flown off else where.

WHY SHOULD YOU BECOME A SCOUT?
 
At Scouts, you can take part in fun activities, get outside and learn exciting things.
For example, in Peterborough, there is a canoe club just for Scouts. Becoming a Scout means you can go to our canoe club and take part in interesting activities such as ‘chariot races’ and ‘rafts’ whilst learning new kayaking skills and earning qualifications.
 
Personally, my favourite experiences in Scouting are the times you are gathered around a flaming fire with other Scouts from your Troop, your District or sometimes even read more…

It was a timed 10.19 mile hike with challenges to complete on route. Teamwork and lots of fun had by all.

This was our 15th annual Chip Shop Hike and the routes had not been used since 2011.
Three 13km  routes were used, this time starting at Bainton Reading Rooms finishing at the Chip Shop near Sainsburys in Bretton.
10 Scouts and 7 Leaders/helpers and 1 Young Leader took part in the hike. It was a very dull and dank day with the temperature around 7C but fortunately no wind.
There were 3 groups hiking over the 3 routes. Everyone saw  the Fitzwilliam Hunt.

All the Scouts got soaked on their hike and Saturday morning.

Dear Parents,
This is to inform you all that
1. From October 29th fees will increase to £13.50 per month, if you pay by direct debit. This works out to be £4.50 per week, if you pay on this basis.
As you are aware, we are a non- profit charity organisation and fees are only being increased, to aid the running costs of the meetings, badges, hall upkeep, utility bill costs and Scout membership fees.

For their Expedition Challenge Award, Scouts work together to plan and take part in a two-day exploration or expedition, including a night away. Over the two days, Scouts navigate their way, cook a meal and complete a task or investigation. For the final part of the Award, they report or present their experiences to others.
Apollo Troop only runs the Expedition Challenge weekend occasionally.

We had a magical time at our annual group St George’s camp this year. Beavers, cubs, scouts and the District Explorer unit, the Dragon Eclipse made their own magic wands, spell books, slime potions and flying keys.
They played Quidditch, explored Aragogs caving system (cardboard), slept under floating candles, cooked pancakes and drank butter beer.
We visited our local church for our parade, and remade our promises. 
As ever, a great warm hearted thanks for every leader, and a wonderful group of parent helpers for making it all happen.

The 11th November 2018 is the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the Great War.
To recognise this, Cambridgeshire Scouts will be producing 2 badges, with all profits going to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
One of these badges will be a uni-form cloth badge, and the other will be a small enamel pin badge.
We are looking for your designs to go towards these badges.
We might take a whole design, or elements of different ones to create the badge.

This was our eleventh Chip Shop Hike. This time starting at Marholm and finishing at “The Hot Box” chip shop at Orton Wistow. We used the same start and finish points in 2016 but this time with two modified routes. Both routes passed an ROC post – see below for more information..

“Peterborough District”, we need a new district badge to wear on our
uniforms – and we’d like you to design it!

This was our first visit to Sherbrooke Scout Campsite north of Nottingham.
18 Scouts and 7 Leaders took part in the weekend.
We arrived on Friday night and it was up early for breakfast and sandwich making for lunch on Saturday.
The minibus and cars took us to Southwell Scout HQ in the centre of Southwell near the Minster.
Two of the three walking groups had a quick look at the outside of the Minster but we unfortunately did not have time for a look inside.

On the Apollo base they had to rescue Thors Hammer from the Frost Giants.
On the Challenger base they had to work their way through lots and lots of keys and padlocks to free the missing team member from his cage! Welcome to our version of Arkham Asylum!!

Both Apollo and Challenger Troops took part in this weekend camp to the Long Mynd. Walking on the Long Mynd on Saturday and rock climbing on Sunday both took place in dry weather. We even had some sunshine.

The weekend (4-6 March 2016) was a great success with the caving being the highlight.
FRIDAY
12 Scouts from Apollo, Challenger and Yaxley Troops with 7 adults from the same troops took part in the weekend, which included hiking, cooking and caving.
Mark’s car was loaded up with kit and the minibus was used to transport all of the Scouts and some of the adults to Chirk Bunkhouse at Chirk in Wales.

This was our ninth Chip Shop Hike and as always 2 new routes were used, this time starting at Marholm and finishing at “The Hot Box” chip shop at Orton Wistow.

Scouts, Beavers and parents attended the Remembrance Sunday Service at Holy Tinity Church in Orton Longueville..The 2 minutes silence was observed outside the church..Flags were then paraded into the church for the rest of the service.The Rev Sid Bridges, Assistant Curate to The Orton’s said that it was “special treat to have you with us – it makes the remembrance service all the more significant.”Robert Shotton, Church Warden said “Thank you for your contribution today. You have got a great bunch of young people!!”

Three groups of Scouts from Apollo and Challenger Troops met the weekend before the expedition (Sat 11 Nov) to plan their journey of exploration from Orton to South Lincolnshire and back. 
 
On the Saturday morning (Sat 18 Nov) of the expedition weekend, the three groups met at Herlington and travelled by bus and foot to get to Shacklewell Hollow campsite east of Stamford.
Each group took the route that they had planned and were accompanied by a leader as a chaperone.

On 6 October 2014 Apollo Troop were at the Peterborough Climbing Wall.
Dean Irons (Acting Group Scout Leader) visited to present two Chief Scout Service Awards.
One to Philip Pearce (Scout Leader – Apollo Troop) – A 10 Year Award and another to
Steve Pearce (Sectional Assistant – Apollo Troop) – A 15 Year Award.

Both awards were presented along with a service award badge.

 After a safety check of the bikes, the three patrols set off to different starting points to find their first photograph of a bear together with a digit from a six figure grid reference.
The patrols then visited the other eight locations to find the remaining bears and grid references.
Once all the Grid refs had been collected and placed in the correct order on the results sheet a six figure grid ref was revealed that took the Scouts to the location of the final bear –

Saturday morning started with a thunderstorm at 7am but by the time the Scouts arrived at 9am the weather had improved.Three troops were involved, 1st Yaxley and Apollo and Challenger from 2nd Nene.

We left the HQ just almost on time with a plan to deal with the A5 closure near Shrewsbury only to find that part of the M54 was closed but the A5 was open. So much for planning.

We arrived at the Chirk Bunkhouse a little later than expected.
After breakfast on the Saturday morning we set off in 3 groups hiking in different directions. All groups went through the Chirk Canal Tunnel and over the Chirk Aquaduct. Crossing the English/Welsh border as we went.

Greg and Steve checked out part of the route in the morning. The flooding had gone down but the wind had come up so we knew it was going to be a wet and windy afternoon walk.

As everyone arrived they took shelter from the wind and rain alongside Lutton Village Hall and when ready, three groups set off on two different routes.
We had showers all afternoon together with sunny periods and some double rainbows.

We got taller and heavier as the mud built up on the bottom of our boots.

In preparation for our Winter Camp on 14-16 March 2014, Phil and Greg visited the Chirk Bunkhouse and surrounding area.
.
The bunk house is very well appointed and equipped.

It is located in glorious walking countryside and adjacent to a world heritage site with points of interest including: a medieval castle and a canal crossing deep valleys over high aqueducts and through the hills in a tunnel.

It is also conveniently located for a superb caving and climbing location.

16 Scouts, 8 each from Apollo and Challenger together with 6 Leaders and Helpers left the HQ on Saturday morning and travelled to Apethorpe for the start of a walk.
The party was split into 3 groups for the walk to Fineshades. Map reading skills were learnt along the way.

One group visited RAF King’s Cliffe and it’s abandoned buildings.
A visit to the King’s Cliffe Airfield Memorial was also combined with lunch.
Various Geo Caches were found along the route.

SWAN – Norfolk Broads Sailing Expedition -11th – 19th April 2014 – 64th Expedition

A whole week of sailing adventure as a member of a 3 to 5 person crew, living aboard a classic yacht and exploring the rivers and broads.
Learn to sail a Norfolk Broads yacht and progress year by year to become a skipper.

The Expedition Fee is £190 per person plus £30 per person crew catering.

THRIFTWOOD SUMMER CAMP 17-24 August 2013

Cubs and Scouts from 2nd Nene, made new friends with Cubs and Scouts from 8th Nene on a week long camp at the Thriftwood Scout Campsite, near Brentwood in Essex.

They travelled on the train there and back , and enjoyed a week of over 10 activities each! Scaling new heights on the high beam, ice climbing and rock climbing. Getting lost in the dark in the cave maze! Travelling at speed on the Cresta run and the read more…

The last Apollo meeting of the summer term took place at the Queen’s Park Centre, and was a joint meeting with Yaxley Scouts.
Scouts from both troops had made their own yachts at previous troop meetings.

Now was the time for the race.
Scouts, in pairs, each had a length of water filled rainwater gutter in which to race their yacht against their opponents.
The winner of each race went on to the next round.

Transport to Camp was by 2 cars and 2 vans.

We arrived at John’s Lee Wood in daylight and quickly found our campsite, SHREW & PARTRIDGE.
The Scouts first task was to put up their Emergency Shelters before it got dark. Making a hot drink using a HEX Stove came next and then to sleep.

Dawn broke or rather the Scouts woke rather earlier than planned.

A group of Scouts from Challenger and Apollo Troops participated in an action-packed day of white-water canoeing, (whoot whoot!) at Cardington on Saturday 22nd June.
Those new to the event or ‘old hands’ had a whale of a time splashing about and riding the small, but not inconsiderable waves, rapids and falls. Scouts and Leaders alike were soon capsizing like professionals, but no worries, there were many hands available to haul them up and on their way for yet another go!

The Zatego Theme this year was Happy 25 th Birthday to Nene Park Trust.
This years Zatego was a little later in the year than normal.
The Zatego Theme this year was Happy 25th Birthday to Nene Park Trust.

19 groups of Scouts from 6 Scout Groups took part and encountered 9 bases on their expedition.

Their tasks ranged from replacing the missing members of the small samba band which have been “lost” in Zatego, to dressing up with grass skirts and negotiating the limbo obstacle course.

This was celebrated at the camp over the weekend so I retired at the end of St George’s Day parade on Sunday.

SWAN 63 took place from Good Friday 29 March to Sat 6 April 2013 and was cold and windy.
Whilst other sailors shied away from the broads due to the cold wintery weather
and strong winds, SWAN took advantage of the empty rivers to enjoy a great week of sailing.
The first few days involved getting used to the boats again in preparation for the ever increasing winds that were forecast.
Monday saw the fleet sail up the Ant where Paul demonstrated a fantastic dive off his boat earning a 9.7 from the judges.

The annual Chip Shop Walk took place today starting at Southey Woods walking through Castor Hanglands and ending up at the Chip Shop in Bretton.
17 Scouts from Apollo and Challenger Troop took part with the help of 13 Leaders an Helpers.
There were 4 groups who walked two different routes.

You may have noticed that it has been rather wet recently which made the footpaths through Castor Hanglands very muddy, enough for one Scout to leave his boot in the mud, which had to be retrieved.

Polo Shirts, T Shirts or Hoodies with the 2nd Nene Logo on them can now be ordered through the Scout Sections. They are all Royal Blue with the 2nd Nene St Peters Logo (as shown below) on the left breast. These do not replace uniform but can be worn for activities, when uniform is not appropriate, or when changing out of uniform for games etc.

Our last meeting before Christmas had the usual treats but with a twist.
Making a sandwich for somebody else, under their instruction, whilst blindfolded.
Wearing BBQ Gloves with the fingers taped together and then peeling a banana, gave some idea what it might be like to have Leprosy.
Making an ice-cream sundae for someone else, to their specification and then feeding it to them. It isn’t easy being fed cold food by someone else.

It is open in the evenings from Monday – Thursday from 6.00pm - 8.00pm and at the weekend Saturday and Sunday’s from 9.30am to 1.30am.
The cafe is located directly opposite the Scout HQ for parents wishing to have some hot refreshments in a warm atmosphere (especially as the cold weather sets in) as they wait to drop off/pick up their child from the HQ. read more…

The activities were centred around getting wet which was not difficult as it was raining part of the time.
Trevor Watson (Nene District Commissioner) presented Philip Pearce (APOLLO Scout Leader) with his Wood Badge and Glynis (Troop Administrator) was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a present after may years of helping the troop – we wish her well for the future.
The evening ended with a BBQ for the Scouts, Leaders and parents.

At an Apollo troop meeting the Scouts made Catapults like the one on the left.
Could they fire a small bean bag into a washing up bowl 8 meters away impossible you might think – then you’d be wrong. Some groups were more successful than others but everyone enjoyed the challenge.
Where the younger leaders any better?  Not really, they went for distance and height rather than accuracy.

On the weekend of 29/30 September 2012 Apollo Troop are staying overnight in the Danish Shelters at Fineshades following a walk from Bulwick to these shelters.
As preparation for this Greg Philip & Steve went on a test walk to try out the routes.It was a warm and cloudy day with the threat of rain but fortunately we missed it.

11 Scouts 1 Young Leader and 9 Leaders and and Helpers took part in the Cycling Marathon which all completed.

This was an APOLLO event but Scouts from Challenger, Yaxley & Stanground also took part.
With the temperature in the mid 20s Tim’s supply of water was very welcome.
At least 2 people fell off, fortunately with only very minor injuries and we had at least one puncture.
The Fish and Chips were very welcome at the end of the ride.

As usual the weather was good. It was sunny and warm on both Saturday and Sunday.
10 Scouts and 4 Leaders/helpers went on the Beaudesert Camp.
We thought we had a 17-seater minibus but this time it was the blue one with only 14 seats including the driver. With careful packing in both the minibus and the support car everything safely stowed.
We arrived on time at Beaudesert Park Camp Site. This time we used the Alpine Barn, which was a bit of a squeeze but we all managed to fit in.

A total of 18 Scouts and 14 Leaders and Helpers from APOLLO and CHALLENGER  went on this years walk from Folksworth to the Chip Shop at Orton Centre.
There were two 11km routes and two groups walked each route.
We had a hot drinks stop at half way.
Thanks to Graham for arranging this and acting as Marshal.

This was one of the sunniest SWAN Expeditions in its 61 year history.
Not like the snow encountered on some SWAN Expeditions.

The wind was light, most mornings, which gave plenty of opportunity to practice quanting – see photo.

SWAN normally starts on a Good Friday but with Easter being late this year Good Friday was at the end of the expedition. This resulted in different tide times to those normally encountered.

This years winter camp took place at the Long Mynd Adventure Camp.

We arrived on Friday night to a building already open and hot water ready for drinks before bed.
After breakfast on Saturday we joined forces with some Scouts from the .. ………………. 26th Shrewsbury and went in the mini bus to Carding Mill Valley at Church Stretton to start our walk.

15 Scouts & 8 Leaders and helpers took part in the annual Chip Shop walk.
This years walk was from Bainton Reading Rooms to Bretton.
It was a cold, cloudy but thankfully a dry day but muddy as the picture on the left shows.
We all increased in height as the mud collected on the bottom of our boots.
Prizes for a map symbol identification competition were awarded on Troop nights.

The 2011 Scout Census is now taking place.

It is important that Scouting reflects the communities in which it operates and provides effective activities and opportunities for all sectors of society.
The census is anonymous and the additional information about disabilities and special needs will help us improve and more accurately target the support we provide for adults and young people.
Forms will be issued to all Beavers Cubs Scouts etc by their Section.

Hello Leaders, helpers, supporters and members.
As the snow settles once more I hope you are enjoying the opportunity for some winter walks or tucked up warm enjoying this festive time of year. We arrived at the Cottage at Gradbach Scout Campsite Friday night at around 10am on.
On Saturday after breakfast and preparing a packed lunch it was up onto the hills with a visit to Ludds Church. In the afternoon we visited Danebridge Trout Farm to catch 17 trout for our evening meal, using garden canes as rods.
The evening was spent together with the Explorers preparing cooking and eating our meal.
On Sunday, with the help of Camp Warden Paul, we built a Tyrolean Traverse . After everyone got together for a buffet read more…

On Saturday and Sunday a total of 14 Scouts & 6 Leaders & helpers went to
Cambridge Gliding Centre at Gransden Lodge Airfield to learn about gliding.
With many thanks to  Herfordshire Scouts who ran the days for us.
We each had a 20 minute flight in the Glider with an Instructor and we had the chance to fly the glider under close supervision.
At least the instuctor knew which  way to fly, to get back to the air strip to land.

Saturday was a very hot day and started with a hike in which three  groups of Explorers and Scouts hiked from Barnwell Village Hall to the campsite at Wadenhoe.
The ten Scout  with the help of 6 Explorers and 6 Leaders and helpers navigated their way over 2 routes of about 14km. One group got slightly lost but not lost enough to miss the shop in Titchmarsh selling ice creams. I’ve never seen Scouts drink so much water it must have been hot. 29C in the shade. Four 2nd Nene teams entered this year’s adventure through the mysterious land of Zatego that appears in Ferry Meadows each March. Each team was set tasks in the “I’m A Scout Get Me Out of  Here” competition.

Not a cloud in the sky but cold and muddy.
19 Scouts from APOLLO and CHALLENGER together with 11 Leaders & Helpers completed the 13km hike from Sawtry to Yaxley with the help of Graham who acted as Route Marshall & competition co-ordinator.
Traditionally, at this time of year, ended at a Chip Shop at Greg’s request.
The competition was to find FLAGS & mark their postion on a map together with their grid references. Each Flag represented a letter, which, when rearranged spelt a word.

Six Leaders and helpers walked the route in preparation for the January 2010 “Chip Shop Walk”
Part of the route was on a footpath that ended in a wood whilst a “Shoot” was in progress. We were allowed to walk on private land to get back to a road. We will not be using this part of the route on 30th January.

Well done to 2nd Nene Explorers. They won BLOOD & GORE, BRAIN TEASING/TEAM BUILDING.

CLIMBING. – Well done to James who came 1st in the climbing. The top 6 climbers won a trip for a days climbing with an instructor, this time, not on a climbing wall but on a real rock face. The 2nd Nene Explorers won the overall Explorers Competition.

At Easter, 7 Scouts from Apollo Troop were part of the party of 22 Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and Instructors from Nene District who took part in the 59th SWAN Sailing Expendition to The Norfolk Broads. This year’s Remembrance Sunday Service at Orton Holy Trinity Church Longueville was attended by the Group with a very smart and well behaved contingent from Apollo troop in attendance. Well done to all the Cycling Groups who all completed the course of over 10km. All groups visited the 6 bases although not in the same order. It was mostly dry when we pitched our tents at Fieldhead Campsite on Friday night. The tents & pitching were tested by the overnight heavy rain – all remained dry. We went on a 10 mile hike on Saturday  near Mam Tour. The rain showers weren’t to much of a nuisance. The Scouts cooked their own evening meal of spaghetti  Bolognaise. It is with great sadness that it is announced that Geoff Keighley who was known to many in the 2nd Nene Group and Nene District as ’The Admiral’ of the SWAN Norfolk Broads Sailing Expedition, passed away peacefully at 3pm on Friday 16th May 2008.

Geoff was taken ill while on The Broads with friends on 21st April and admitted into Norwich Hospital ICU. A few days before he died he was transferred to Winchester by Helicopter.

17 children and 5 leaders went for Beavers day out at Flag Fen.

Although the weather was cold and at times wet, they had a great day.They explored the round houses and even cooked twists and showed a group of girl guides how to make them. The group went on an organised tour which included information about family life in the times of the iron age.  read more…

As a result of their efforts (together with other parishioners) the Autumn leaves have been cleared away, memorials cleared of litter and dead flowers, paths cleaned and  tidied, trees cleared of ivy, gutters downspouts and drains cleaned out at Holy Trinity.
It has been agreed the participants are due their Environment Partnership Award as a result of their efforts, as the Churchyard is now prepared for the Spring and Summer.

The older members of the 2nd Nene Apollo Scout Troop were seconded to carry out a top secret intelligence reconnaissance mission in a 3rd world country. Unfortunately their plane was shot down behind enemy lines and they needed to navigate to an agreed extraction point within a limited time scale.
The good news was that all survived without injury.  But the enemy knew the location of the crash site and were looking for survivors.  The Roads were heavily patrolled, so the best means of escape was to get off the roads read more…

There were two routes – the longer was over13km. The longest hike the Troop has done for many years. It was a lovely bright Sunny day. 16 Scouts in 5 groups took part in the walk starting around 1.30pm. There were questions to answer along the way. Usually most slow down near the end of the hike but finishing at a Fish & Chip shop meant that everyone speeded up. We were all eating chips by 6.30pm.

9 Scouts found out what it was like to breathe air underwater and experience the underwater world at Whittlsey swimming pool with a Discover Scuba Diving introduction to scuba diving. It is was run by DIVE IN LTD. For more information.

Many thanks from the Quartermaster and Building Manager to the Scouts, Cub, helpers, parents and a grumpy old man, who turned up on Saturday morning to help dig a trench for installing a new water pipe. 52 Scouts and Explorers from all over Peterborough spent an action packed day at the ‘Snozone’ .
Verdicts on the day were ‘wicked’, ‘awesome’, ‘brill’. A great day was had by all and the unity from the youngsters, some who had come as individuals from various scout troops, was a credit to them all.

The Cubs & Beavers had been taking part in activities and events to gain their Health and Fitness and their Healthy Eating badges and were delighted that Shane could go down to the hall to present them with their badges.
Each Beaver received a certificate as well as their badges.
This also earned the young Cubs and Beavers their “meet someone from the community” badge. Our other assistants cubs / scout also had a thank you certificate.

Following our groups use of Icelandic tents at Ferry Meadows Centenary
camp, Second Nene Scout Group had been requested to provide a
Demonstration Troop for erecting and packing traditional tents.
Sunday 1st July saw a small intrepid band of volunteers (should that read
press-ganged) Scouts and a Cub at the Party in the Park at Central Park,
Peterborough.
After flag break at 12 noon, we had a tent up by 12:40.

We quickly built base camp in the grass area near to the course finish. Volunteers were sort, to pull the canoes out of the water at the bottom of the run.
We soon had all scouts kitted out in buoyancy aids and helmets, they grabbed canoes and paddles and made for the top of the course.

The 22 February 2007 is the 150th birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the World Scout Movement. The anniversary is celebrated by nearly 28 million Scouts across the world as ‘Founder’s Day’ and will be marked by parties, events and activities, normally on the Sunday closest to the date.
Co-incidentally, Baden-Powell shared his birthday with his wife, Olave, who later became World Chief Guide. Girlguiding UK celebrates the same day as ‘Thinking Day.’

SWAN this year tested the sailing skills of the skippers and crew.
The weather was varied with high winds at all times.
No sailing was possible on the first Saturday.

The MIZ (Military Intelligence Zatego) Special Agents where sent on a Mission to find Zatego heros Harry Munsen and Gus Motley.
Their last know whereabouts was the NewZealand Rugby Team Training Camp. Having missed them here the MIZ Special Agents tracked them through numerous countries inluding China, USA, Switzerland – where they had to ski to try to catch up with them. A donation was recently made by Pegassus pack to Magpas.
Magpas is the emergency medical charity for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Volunteers are dedicated to saving lives and reducing suffering for patients at the scenes of serious incidents.
However, saving lives costs money and Magpas is funded solely by donations from the general public.

The Autumn Camp was organised differently this year. With a young Scout
Troop the emphasis was on navigation training and fun. We arrived Friday
evening and made preparations for an early start on Saturday. Saturday
morning was spent learning about map reading and navigation whilst
exploring the forest around the campsite. After lunch various games
took place and a Prize winning ‘Pacing Competition’ followed. After more
exploration on the way back to the campsite, the evening meal preparations were
completed and a Banquet followed.

Apollo Scouts went on a lightweight hike and camp over the weekend.
Ten scouts from the Apollo troop of the 2nd Nene Scout Group walked from Stamford to Maxey part of the way walking along the Torpel Way. On arrival at the site they pitched hike tents to camp overnight.
The Scouts cooked their own evening meal on portable gas or petrol stoves trying out various foods suitable for lightweight camping.
After clearing up from the meal, the evening was spent, playing games and familiarising themselves read more…

This year’s annual Easter sailing expedition was another great success. The Peterborough contingent of 15 was part of the expedition of 79 that sailed 17 yachts for a week on the Norfolk Broads. Congratulations to: Stephen for a successful week in charge of a 24′ traditional sailing yacht; and also to Matt, Stuart, Nick, Edward, Mick Pummell and Emma Jackson for attaining their SWAN Intermediate / RYA Level 2 Keelboat Certificates.

We met at Yarwell Cross Roads. Three Groups including one group of Explorers walked to Orton Wistow Chip Shop.
The route went past Yarwell Mill, Wandsford Nene Valley Station, Water Newton Mill, Cator Mill and Alwalton.
A first aid training incident ( Matt had hurt his head) was dealt with near Castor Station.
The weather was fine and the river level had dropped signifcantly from that seen on the plannning hike two weeks earlier.

9 Scouts, 2 explorers and 9 Leader/Helpers went on a walking weekend to the Long Mynd.
Saturday was spent walking on various routes up and over the Long Mynd in the low cloud, rain and occassional sunshine.
Saturday evening the Scouts and Explorers prepared 3 main courses and 2 sweets, all under Mike’s carefull guidance.
Sunday we visited Ironbridge and went in the Tar Tunnell.
